Seniors Pass First Big Test at Georgia State Champs
Fountain medals, Norcini, Jahns score12/12/16 - Gwinnett Aquatics' senior swimmers had their first real test of the the season this weekend at Senior State Champs en route to a fourteenth place finish and fourth in the medium teams group. Josh Fountain was the lone top-10 finisher, taking 3rd in the 1000 free while Alex Norcini and Sarah Jahns also scored. Norcini had an 8th place finish in the 400 IM negated by an unusually strict application of the "Lochte rule". Both Jahns and Norcini picked up their first AAA times of the season. Lauren Diehl and Hayley Shepard got their first AA times and Merilyn Coughlin got her freest A time. Jahns and Johnson also got new sectional times.
This meet was the first prelims/finals meet for our Senior swimmers and they faced a majority of swimmers who were tapered and shaved and held their own. This gives our GaGa swimmers a real advantage for the meets in February and March.

Gwinnett Aquatics Kicks Off Season With Pentathlon
10/2 - Gwinnett Aquatics kicked off the 2016-17 season with a Pentathlon meet at GAC today. For the first time ever we opened up the meet this year to a few other teams and it provided for some great early season competition. Being the first meet of the season it was a great chance for a lot of swimmers to show off how much they've improved since the last time we swam short course last March. Swimmers were scored based on the cumulative total of their swims in 5 events. GwinAq Age group winners were: Isaac Saenz, Lindsey Diehl, Sofie Rees, Ava Gawronski, Caitlyn Diehl and Drew Grier.
A whopping 64 swimmers achieved their first time standards, including some new swimmers. See all the standard breakers using the link below.

Senior Swimmers Rock the Post-Season
8/8 - A number of our senior swimmers finished out their season at the bigger regional meets last week. Juliana Carey posted all best times at the Futures Champs in Atlanta while Josh Fountain medaled twice and Alex Norcini scored twice at the Zone Champs in Charlotte. Both were competing as part of the Georgia Zone Team.

Senior State Champs
7/25 - Much of the Gwinnett Aquatics senior group finished out the season this weekend in Cumming at the Senior State Champs. With some swimmers coming here after their taper meet at Dynamo two weeks ago and three swimmers still headed to Zones and Futures, the meet was the focus meet for a smaller group of swimmers than usual.
Despite a more challenging venue than we usually have for this meet, those swimmers definitely took advantage. Jacob Rees broke an 18 yr-old team record, going 53.03 in the 100 free. Daniel Johnson picked up his first ever Sectional cut (1500) and Matthew Albers and Julianna Carey picked up their first AAA times of the season.
We also had some of the best relay swims in a while, including a couple of records at the Sr and Age Group State meets. The Sr boys broke the 800 free relay record (scoring 4th) and the 13-14 girls broke the 400 free relay record. We will be adding the relay records to our records list soon but I have listed them here as well as some relays from this summer that were close.

Gwinnett Aquatics 12th at 14U State Champs
7/18 - Gwinnett Aquatics finished 12th at this weekend's 14U state champs at Ga Tech. We were just 16 points out of 10th (out of 450!) and that score was good enough to put us third in the medium-sized teams division. It was a good showing after a strong year of work but possibly could have been higher if we had more consistent practice attendance this summer.
Isaac Saenz led all scorers, making the podium four times and scoring in an additional two events. Griffin Hammett, Samantha Lewis, Marlowe Misner, Lauren Diehl and Bryce Dopson also scored. Hammett picked up his first AAAA (Silver cap) of the season and he, Lauren Diehl and Marlowe Misner got new team records in the 100 fly, 100 fly and 50 fly respectively.
Nia Fraser and Ava Gawronski picked up their first AA times of the season (first ever for Fraser) and Hannah Claire Jowers got her first ever A time.
And of course what can I say about our parent (and swimmer) volunteers. There were so many families who gave up so much of their time to make this meet a success: in the hospitality room, as officials (way to go Judy!), or on deck as times, runners, or a variety of other jobs. We have earned a great reputation as an organization that does things right! And deservedly so.

Meanwhile Sarah Jahns was competing with the Georgia Open Water Zone Team at the Open Water Champs in Fort Myers, FL. Sarah took 9th in the 15-16 race against a very competitive field. The course had been shortened to 2.5k due to high water temps.
Rosenburg Invite, Rain and Racing

After a year off, the Invite returned this year with a new format and a completely tolerable afternoon shower. the swimmers capitalized with a host of first time long course swims, new best times and new time standards.
Another change was that we swam the meet as a dual meet with Lifetime Fitness. The scoring was tight in most events with. GA taking the win 874-620 mostly on the 400, 800 free and 200 IM events.
Isaac Saenz got his first ever AAA (All-Star) time while Matthew Albers, Marlowe Misner, and Drew Grier got their first AA's. Long Course Season Kicks Off at Ga Tech
5/1/16 - Over fifty GaGa swimmers kicked off the long course season this weekend at the Long Course Kickoff at Georgia Tech. The first meet of every year is always a lot of fun with lots of swimmers getting to see how much they've improved since last summer with some big drops. This year the percentage of best times was even higher than usual. Even some of the teens in the morning got to get some PRs, which doesn't happen as often in season for older swimmers.
This year we're also off to a faster start than last year with a number of swimmers already picking up AAA (Griffin Hammett, Alex Norcini) and AA (Samantha Lewis, Rachel Peden, Isaac Saenz) times. New swimmer Freddy Xu even picked up his first State cut!

New Standards Fall at 14U State Champs
2/21/16 - Gwinnett Aquatics' Age Group state team competed at 14U Champs this weekend at Ga Tech. It was a slightly smaller team than last year but more competitive in the relays. Thanks to those relays, and despite having fewer swimmers score individually, GwinAq moved up two places from last year to thirteenth overall, sixth in the medium sized teams division. Individually Lindsey Diehl and Griffin Hammett led the way with Diehl recording nine top ten scores and Hammett scoring in six events. .
Samantha Lewis and Rachel Peden picked up their first AAA times while Ryan Haskins got his first AA time. With far fewer swimmers aging up next season (six state swimmers aged up in the last 2 months), we should have a great long course state team!
